Bottle feeding fun

Kayla has been on nasal cannula all day now for a few days and seems to be doing well on it. She still gets the mask CPAP for 5 minutes every 4 hours to give her a little boast, which she is not a big fan of. She usually tries to 'help' the nurses by pushing their hand away or kicking them. Thankfully the nurses don't take it personally.

We also started to 'practice' bottle feeding her. A few time a day the nurses or I give her a bottle to see if she will drink any. She seems to have the sucking reflex down, as seen with her pacifier/binky. However, the concept of swallowing hasn't quite worked for her yet. She will try to drink for a few minutes, with some of the milk coming right back out, and then she falls asleep. As with pretty much everything in the NICU, the nurses said this is normal because she really is too young and weak to drink at this point. They are just trying to get the idea in her head so when she is strong enough it may be easier. Of course we also have the concept of breast feeding to work on yet! Many challenges yet to come but she has come a long way already.

  1. Hi - the photos of Kayla are amazing, she looks so cute with the bottle in her mouth, and her little outfits are adorable. She truly is a little miracle. The nurses sound amazing and so reassuring for you to know what their thoughts are. I think of you all the time, just wish I could be there to see Kayla in person. However will I wait til Sept to come over??? You'll just have to keep posting lots of photos. Love to everyone, and a little kiss for Kayla. Judy
